Very well done to my student, who was the youngest ever person to present at the British Nuclear Medicine Society (BNMS) annual conference. Very proud of her. You can read the full story here: https://varndean.ac.uk/PortiaSmith

Royal Society of Biology responds to inquiry on the STEM skills gap
The Science and Technology Select Committee recently launched an inquiry into closing the STEM skills gap, after receiving repeated evidence that the UK is facing a STEM skills shortage. The Royal Society of Biology (RSB) welcomed the Committee’s inquiry and submitted a response earlier this month, which has now been published.
The Society’s response highlighted some of the key issues around uptake of STEM careers, as well as projects that are currently being undertaken in the bioscience sector that are working to address the skills gap.

Brighton Student’s Success at the Archery GB Indoor Championships
My amazing student Natasha Homer did ever so well in the recent Indoor GB Archery Championships……. and she’ such a brilliant Biology student too!
As a Varndean College student she was selected to represent England in both the Junior and Senior level at the Archery GB Indoor Championships which took place last weekend at NAEC, Stoneleigh Park. It was definitely the highlight of Natasha’s year as she describes below:
“I had an incredible weekend at the Archery GB indoor national championships. On the Saturday I represented England at the junior indoor home nations match as part of the junior championships. Individually I placed 5th in U18s, and the England team came 2nd to Scotland by one point.
On Sunday I shot in the senior championships and finished 17th out of 107 people. The whole weekend was an amazing experience and shooting for England has definitely been a highlight for 2016!”
Well done to a brilliant sports potential as well as a fantastic scientific student.
